Atlético Madrid were founded in 1903 by Basque students living in the Spanish capital, which is why their red-and-white stripes echo Athletic Club. Long cast as the working-class alternative to Real Madrid, Atlético have won 11 Spanish league titles. Since Diego Simeone's arrival in 2011, the club has become one of Europe's most formidable sides, winning La Liga in 2014 and 2021, two Europa Leagues and reaching two Champions League finals. In 2017 they moved from the Vicente Calderón to the Metropolitano in the east of the city.
