Valencia CF were founded in 1919 and are one of Spain's biggest clubs, with six league titles, including in 2002 and 2004 under Rafael Benítez, when they also won the UEFA Cup. Valencia reached consecutive Champions League finals in 2000 and 2001. The club has played at the Mestalla since 1923, one of the oldest and steepest stadiums in European football, and a new stadium project has been under way for many years.
