Corrections & Retractions

Accuracy is non-negotiable. When we get something wrong, we say so clearly, on the record, and in public.

Minor corrections

Spelling of a name, a mistyped date, a wrong shirt number: these are corrected silently in the text as soon as they are identified. They do not require a correction note.

Substantive corrections

When an error materially affects what a story said, whether a wrong transfer fee, an incorrectly attributed quote, a misidentified person, or a factual claim that turns out to be false, we log a correction directly on the story. The correction note states the date, what the original text said, and what it should have said. It remains on the story permanently. We do not rewrite history.

Retractions

When a story’s core premise proves false, when a transfer that was “done deal” never happens, when a claim at the heart of a report is disproved, we do not delete the story. We update it with the new facts, add a prominent retraction note at the top, and keep the full correction log intact. The original claim, the evidence that disproved it, and the date of the retraction are all public.

How corrections are displayed

Correction notes appear at the bottom of each affected article, timestamped. For serious errors, a prominent notice appears at the top of the article as well. All corrections are part of the permanent public record of the story.
