Robin Le Normand was born in Brittany and grew up in France, but he built his career in Spain. He joined Real Sociedad’s B team in 2016 and worked his way into the first team, becoming a mainstay of the side that won the Copa del Rey in 2020.
After obtaining Spanish citizenship, he was called up by Spain in 2023 and started most of the matches as Spain won Euro 2024. Atlético Madrid signed him later that summer.
Le Normand is a traditional, aggressive centre-back who defends his box well and is strong in the air. He fits comfortably into Diego Simeone’s demanding, compact defensive system.
Playing style
Le Normand is a no-nonsense centre-back who is strong in the air, aggressive in the tackle and very reliable in his own penalty area. He is at his best defending crosses and physical forwards. With the ball he is simple and safe, playing short passes to midfielders rather than attempting risky long balls. He is also known for his leadership and for a willingness to throw himself in front of shots. These qualities made him a natural fit for Diego Simeone’s demanding defensive system.
International career
Le Normand was born in France and played for French youth teams, but he became eligible for Spain after years living there. He made his Spain debut in 2023 and was a starter for most of Euro 2024, forming a partnership with Aymeric Laporte as Spain won the tournament with seven wins from seven matches.
