Manchester United’s Champions League campaign took another hit on Tuesday as they lost 2-0 to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano stadium. Atletico scored within the first minute, setting the tone for a difficult night for the visitors. The second goal came shortly after United were reduced to ten men when Leny Yoro received a harsh red card. Despite United creating chances, they failed to convert, while Atletico’s efforts were repeatedly denied by the crossbar.
Youri Tielemans, deployed in an unfamiliar No.10 role instead of Bruno Fernandes, admitted after the game that United were “found out” by Atletico’s quality, especially in the first half. Speaking to Amazon Prime, the Belgian midfielder said, “It is a tough one. When you concede after a minute it is hard to get into the game straight away. We had more compactness at times, at times we were found out as they had the quality and were going to play through us.”
The decision to start Tielemans in a more advanced position raised eyebrows, particularly as he struggled to press effectively, track back, and win duels. His performance illustrated the gap Atletico exploited, leaving Michael Carrick’s tactical adjustments open to question. The Belgian’s struggles in midfield underscored the challenges United faced trying to contain Diego Simeone’s side.
The defeat comes amid mounting tension within the squad, following Lisandro Martinez’s recent outburst directed at the club’s sponsor, INEOS. Tielemans declined to comment directly on Martinez’s remarks but emphasised the need for unity. He said, “It is very hard to say after a defeat that there are positives. We just have to work hard, to keep working and keep trusting in our structure. We have to keep working, keep trusting each other and be together on this.”
Atletico Madrid could have increased their lead further but were denied by the woodwork on several occasions. United’s inability to capitalise on their own chances left them with no foothold in the game. The sending off of Yoro, which came just moments after Atletico’s second goal, further hampered United’s efforts to mount a comeback.
With this loss, United’s position in the Champions League group has become precarious, and questions remain over Carrick’s tactical approach and squad selection. Tielemans’s frank assessment of being “found out” reflects a team struggling to find cohesion against top-level opposition. The Belgian’s call for trust and work suggests the players are aware of the need to regroup quickly as their season continues to unravel.
