Jan Oblak left Slovenia for Benfica as a teenager in 2010 and spent several seasons on loan around Portugal before establishing himself. Atlético Madrid signed him in 2014 to replace Thibaut Courtois, and he has been their goalkeeper ever since.
Under Diego Simeone, Oblak became the foundation of one of Europe’s meanest defences. He has won the Zamora Trophy, awarded to La Liga’s goalkeeper with the best goals-against record, five times, and he was in goal when Atlético won La Liga in 2020/21 and the Europa League in 2018.
Oblak is not a showman. His strength is positioning and calm, so that difficult saves look routine. He captains Slovenia and led them to the knockout stage of Euro 2024.
Playing style
Oblak’s goalkeeping is built on positioning. He rarely needs to dive dramatically because he is already in the right place, and his handling is so secure that rebounds are rare. He is particularly strong at close range and in one-on-one situations, where he stays big and makes himself hard to beat. His distribution is steady rather than spectacular, which suited the direct, defensive style Atlético played for much of his career. Consistency is his hallmark: for a decade he has been among the best goalkeepers in La Liga every season.
International career
Oblak has been Slovenia’s first-choice goalkeeper since the mid-2010s and is now captain. He led them to Euro 2024, their first major tournament since 2010, where they drew all three group games and reached the last 16 before losing to Portugal on penalties, despite Oblak saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in extra time.
Career in numbers
Oblak’s senior club career, which began in 2008/09, has so far brought 656 appearances for 7 clubs. His busiest campaign was 2023/24, when he played 54 matches for Atlético Madrid. So far in 2026/27 he has made 8 appearances for Atlético Madrid. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
