Manchester United were founded in 1878 as Newton Heath, a railway workers' team, and became Manchester United in 1902. The club rebuilt after the 1958 Munich air disaster to win the European Cup in 1968 under Matt Busby. Under Alex Ferguson, United won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues, including the 1999 treble. With 20 league titles they share the English record with Liverpool. Former midfielder Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach in 2026.
