Milan owner Gerry Cardinale sports bold ‘Make Milan Great Again’ hat at training session

Milan owner Gerry Cardinale appeared at the club’s training session on Saturday wearing a red cap emblazoned with the slogan “Make Milan Great Again.” The phrase, a clear nod to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign slogan, drew attention as Cardinale arrived at Milanello to observe the team’s preparations before Sunday’s Serie A match against Sassuolo.

Cardinale, founder of RedBird Capital Partners, completed his takeover of AC Milan in 2022. He stayed with the squad over the weekend and took a front-row seat during Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim’s press conference ahead of the match at the Mapei Stadium. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, citing MilanNews, the owner watched training in the morning before settling in to hear Amorim’s remarks.

Milan currently sit fifth in Serie A with 11 points from their opening fixtures, two points behind Roma, Inter, and Lazio. The club’s recent injury list includes Alexis Saelemaekers and Pervis Estupiñán, both sidelined for the trip to Sassuolo. AC Milan last won the Scudetto in 2022, just months before Cardinale’s acquisition of the club.

The “Make Milan Great Again” slogan on Cardinale’s cap signals an intent to restore the club’s status. Milan, one of Italy’s most successful teams, has experienced fluctuating fortunes in recent seasons. Cardinale’s presence at training and the press event underlined his hands-on approach since taking control.

Sunday’s fixture at the Mapei Stadium will test Milan’s ability to close the gap on the teams above them in the league table. Cardinale’s attendance suggested he wants to be closely involved in the club’s progress on the pitch as well as in the boardroom.
