Rúben Amorim was a versatile midfielder who won Portuguese titles with Benfica and played for Portugal at two World Cups. He began coaching at Casa Pia and then Braga, where he won the League Cup in 2020.
Sporting CP appointed him in March 2020, and in 2020/21 he led them to their first league title in 19 years. He won a second title in 2023/24, playing a distinctive 3-4-3 system with an emphasis on young players.
Manchester United appointed him in November 2024. His tenure there ended in 2026, and he took charge of AC Milan that summer.
Coaching style
Amorim is known for his 3-4-3 system, with wing-backs pushing high, inside forwards playing close to the striker and an emphasis on young players. His Sporting teams were well organised, pressed intensely and attacked quickly, and he developed several players who were later sold for large fees. He is a strong communicator and motivator, and his honesty in press conferences has attracted attention. His spell at Manchester United was difficult, but his record at Sporting made him one of Europe’s most respected young coaches.
International career
As a player, Amorim won 14 caps for Portugal and was part of the squads at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
