Luis Enrique played for both Real Madrid and Barcelona and won 62 caps for Spain as a versatile midfielder and forward. After retiring he began coaching at Barcelona B, then managed Roma and Celta Vigo.
He returned to Barcelona as head coach in 2014 and won the treble in his first season, with Messi, SuΓ‘rez and Neymar leading the attack. After three seasons he left, and he later managed Spain from 2018 to 2022, reaching the Euro 2020 semi-finals.
Paris Saint-Germain appointed him in 2023. He moved the club away from a star-dominated approach towards an intense, collective pressing team, and in 2025 PSG won their first Champions League, beating Inter 5-0 in the final, making him one of a small group of coaches to win the competition with two clubs.
Coaching style
Luis Enrique’s teams press high, move the ball quickly and play with intensity. He values collective effort over individual stars, as shown at PSG, where he moved away from a team built around big names. He is demanding, direct in his communication and willing to make difficult decisions, including dropping big players. His teams are flexible, able to dominate possession or counter-attack quickly. He is also known for his emphasis on physical fitness and a strong team spirit.
