João Cancelo grew up in Barreiro, across the Tagus from Lisbon, and came through Benfica’s academy. He moved to Valencia in 2014 and later played for Inter and Juventus, winning Serie A in 2019.
Manchester City signed him that summer, and under Pep Guardiola he became one of the most inventive full-backs in the world, moving into midfield from either flank. He won two Premier League titles before loans at Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
After two seasons at Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Cancelo returned to Barcelona in 2026. He has won more than 60 caps for Portugal and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
Playing style
Cancelo is one of the most inventive full-backs of his generation. He can play on either flank and is at his best moving into central midfield from full-back, a role Pep Guardiola developed at Manchester City. From there he dictates play, dribbles past opponents and plays creative passes with both feet. His crossing and long-range shooting are also excellent. Defensively he is less reliable than going forward, but his technical quality makes him a unique weapon for teams that dominate possession. His return to Barcelona reunited him with a club where he had already spent a successful loan season.
International career
Cancelo has won more than 60 caps for Portugal and won the UEFA Nations League in 2019. He played at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, and is one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Career in numbers
Across 14 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2013/14, Cancelo has played 447 matches and scored 26 goals for 8 clubs. His best scoring return came in 2023/24: 4 goals in 42 appearances for Barcelona. His busiest campaign was 2021/22, with 52 appearances. So far in 2026/27 he has 1 goal in 7 appearances for Barcelona. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
