Alexis Mac Allister grew up in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, in a footballing family: his father Carlos played for Argentina and Boca Juniors. He came through Argentinos Juniors and joined Brighton in 2019.
At Brighton he grew into one of the Premier League’s best midfielders. In 2022 he became a key part of Argentina’s World Cup-winning team, scoring against Poland in the group stage. Liverpool signed him in 2023.
Mac Allister is an intelligent, versatile midfielder who can play as a No. 6 or further forward. He won the Premier League with Liverpool in 2024/25 and the 2024 Copa América with Argentina.
Playing style
Mac Allister is an intelligent, technical midfielder who can play as a No. 6, No. 8 or further forward. He controls the tempo with accurate passing, finds space between the lines and scores goals from midfield, including from long range and penalties. He is also a willing presser and tackler, making him effective in both phases. His versatility was important for Liverpool, where he initially played as a defensive midfielder before settling into a box-to-box role. His game is built on calm decision-making rather than athleticism.
International career
Mac Allister made his Argentina debut in 2019 and became a starter at the 2022 World Cup, where he scored against Poland and played in the final win over France. He won the 2024 Copa América and has been a regular in the team since.
