Biography

Elliot Anderson came through Newcastle United’s academy but found it hard to break into a team that was spending heavily. His move to Nottingham Forest in 2024 changed his career.

At Forest he became a box-to-box midfielder who could tackle, carry the ball and press, and he played a central role as the club challenged for European qualification. His form earned him a senior England call-up. Anderson qualified to play for Scotland and represented them at youth level before choosing England.

In summer 2026 Manchester City paid £116 million to sign him, making him the club’s record signing. He was brought in as one of the pillars of the post-Guardiola midfield, with the energy to cover ground and the technique to play through a press.

Playing style

Anderson is a complete central midfielder. He covers huge distances, wins the ball back through tackles and interceptions, and then carries it forward with purpose, driving past opponents rather than always passing sideways. He is strong in the challenge despite a slight frame, and his passing range has improved steadily. At Nottingham Forest he became one of the Premier League’s most effective ball-winners and ball-carriers, a combination that made him so expensive. He can play as a No. 6, No. 8 or even further forward.

International career

Anderson represented Scotland at youth level through his grandparents before switching to England, where he played for the Under-21s. He made his senior England debut in 2025 and has since become a regular in the squad.

Career in numbers

Across 7 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2020/21, Anderson has played 175 matches and scored 13 goals for 4 clubs. The 2021/22 season, with 7 goals from 21 matches for Bristol Rovers, remains his highest tally. His busiest campaign was 2025/26, with 50 appearances. So far in 2026/27 he has made 7 appearances for Manchester City. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
