Liverpool are reportedly making a shock £50m bid to re-sign midfielder Curtis Jones, who has been linked with a move to Inter Milan.
According to the Athletic, Inter had offered Jones a deal worth €40m, but the latest offer was €35m, just shy of Liverpool's valuation.
Liverpool's transfer activity has been slow this summer, with key departures such as Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate yet to be replaced. The Reds are now lacking in attacking output, with Virgil van Dijk's defensive partner Jeremy Jacquet an unknown quantity.
The club had been counting on Konate's presence, but his departure has left a gap that has yet to be filled. Joe Gomez, another experienced option, will miss the start of the season due to injury issues.
Meanwhile, Inter's interest in Jones has been well-documented, with the midfielder reportedly willing to move to the Italian club. His current contract has just one year remaining, and the only reason he has stayed at Liverpool is the lack of a suitable offer from Inter.
Liverpool, however, are said to be keen on re-opening contract talks with Jones and offering him a long-term deal. The club's willingness to do so suggests they are willing to meet Jones's demands and keep him at Anfield.
The situation is another example of Liverpool's summer transfer struggles, which have left the club's squad looking uncertain ahead of the new season.
