Alexander Volkanovski faces undefeated Movsar Evloev in a featherweight title defence at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi this Saturday, with Georges St-Pierre offering a measured prediction on the outcome. The fight will take place at the Etihad Arena, where Volkanovski will defend his 145-pound championship for the second time in his current reign.
St-Pierre, a UFC legend himself, described Evloev as a fighter who applies relentless pressure and is difficult to shake once he gains control. “Evloev is someone who’s very strong and he puts a lot of pressure and once he gets a hold of you, he’s very hard to let go,” he told Covers.
Volkanovski, 38, will be six years older than Evloev, who is 32. The age gap prompted St-Pierre to consider how the champion’s physical abilities might be affected. “With age, normally your experience improves and you’re smarter. However, your athletic ability starts to diminish a little bit. And sometimes there are things that you used to see coming and now you, they can surprise you,” St-Pierre said. “Yeah, 38, you’re at sometime at the limit. So, is the best version of Volkanovski in the past? I don’t know. We will find out.”
Despite the questions about age, St-Pierre acknowledged Volkanovski’s all-around skill set and intelligence in the octagon. “Volkanovski’s good everywhere. He’s the full package. He’s very well-rounded and very smart,” he said.
The champion’s experience and adaptability have made him one of the most dominant featherweights in UFC history, and he is widely regarded as the greatest in the division. This bout will test whether he can maintain that status against a younger contender who remains undefeated in the organisation.
St-Pierre concluded that if Volkanovski performs at his usual level, he expects the champion to retain his title. “I think if Volkanovski shows up the best of his ability, on top of his game, I think he can do it,” he said.
UFC 333’s main event is highly anticipated, with both fighters bringing contrasting styles and attributes to the cage. Volkanovski’s experience and versatility will meet Evloev’s pressure and strength in a fight that could define the featherweight landscape for years to come. The outcome remains uncertain, but St-Pierre’s perspective captures the tension between seasoned expertise and youthful energy in this title clash.
