Kobbie Mainoo grew up in Stockport and joined Manchester United’s academy as a child. He broke into the first team in late 2023, and his calm, technical style in central midfield quickly made him a regular.
In May 2024 he scored the second goal as United beat Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup final. That summer he started for England in the European Championship final against Spain, still aged 19.
Mainoo is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and turning away from opponents, and he is seen as one of the most important homegrown players at the club.
Playing style
Mainoo is a technical, composed central midfielder who is comfortable under pressure. He receives the ball in tight spaces, turns away from opponents and plays forward passes, qualities that recall some of the great English midfielders. He is also a good dribbler and has an eye for goal, as he showed with his goal in the 2024 FA Cup final. His calmness in big games has impressed many, and his rise at United was one of the positive stories of a difficult period for the club. Injuries have occasionally interrupted his progress.
International career
Mainoo made his England debut in March 2024 and quickly established himself in the team. He started in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, aged 19, and was one of England’s best performers in the tournament.
