John Stones grew up in Barnsley and made his debut for his hometown club before joining Everton in 2013. His composure on the ball stood out immediately, and Manchester City signed him in 2016 for around Β£47 million.
Under Pep Guardiola, Stones became one of the most tactically versatile defenders in the world. In the 2022/23 treble season he played a hybrid role, starting at centre-back and stepping into midfield when City had the ball. He won six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.
Stones has won more than 80 caps for England. He joined Inter on a free transfer in 2026.
Playing style
Stones is one of the most tactically intelligent defenders of his generation. He is comfortable on the ball, able to dribble out of defence and play precise passes through the lines. At Manchester City he played a unique hybrid role in the treble season, starting at centre-back and moving into midfield when City had the ball, which gave them an extra passer in central areas. Injuries have limited his availability in recent seasons, but when fit he remains an elegant and effective defender. He is also known for his calm temperament.
International career
Stones has won more than 80 caps for England. He was a key player at the 2018 World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals, and played at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, where England reached the final both times. He also played at the 2022 World Cup.
