Diogo Jota died on 3 July 2025, aged 28, in a car accident in Spain, along with his brother André Silva. His death, days after his wedding, shocked football and prompted tributes from around the world.
Jota grew up in Gondomar, near Porto, and began his career at Paços de Ferreira. After a spell at Atlético Madrid and a loan at Porto, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he helped them win promotion and reach the Europa League quarter-finals.
Liverpool signed him in 2020. Known for his intelligent movement, finishing and heading ability, he won the League Cup, FA Cup and Premier League with the club, and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal in 2025. Liverpool retired his No. 20 shirt in his honour.

Jota was a clever, versatile forward who could play on either wing or through the middle. Team-mates described him as a humble, dedicated professional and a devoted family man.
International career
