Alphonso Davies was born in a refugee camp in Ghana to Liberian parents who had fled civil war, and moved to Canada at five. He made his debut for Vancouver Whitecaps at 15, becoming one of the youngest players in MLS history.
Bayern Munich signed him in 2019, and he won the Champions League in 2020 as part of a treble. His extraordinary speed made him one of the best left-backs in the world.
Davies is Canada’s most famous player and scored their first-ever World Cup goal in 2022.
Playing style
Davies is one of the fastest players in world football. His speed allows him to attack from left-back and recover when opponents break, making him effectively a winger and a full-back at the same time. He is also a good dribbler, able to beat opponents in tight spaces. His rise from a refugee camp to winning the Champions League is one of the most remarkable stories in modern football. Injuries have interrupted recent seasons, but his talent remains exceptional.
International career
Davies made his Canada debut in 2017, at 16, and has become their most famous player. He scored Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup goal against Croatia in 2022 and helped them reach the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa AmΓ©rica.
Career in numbers
Across 12 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2016, Davies has played 337 matches and scored 28 goals for 2 clubs.
