Diego Gomez scores stunning halfway line goal as Brighton crush Crystal Palace 5-0

Diego Gomez stunned the American Express Stadium on Sunday with a goal from just inside Crystal Palace’s half as Brighton & Hove Albion swept aside their rivals 5-0. The midfielder’s strike from 51 metres flew over goalkeeper Walter Benitez, recalling David Beckham’s famous effort against Wimbledon three decades ago. It was the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney’s 58-metre finish for Everton in 2017.

Brighton’s dominance was clear early on. Jaydee Canvot’s own goal gave the Seagulls the lead before Gomez’s spectacular shot doubled their advantage inside the opening 10 minutes. Yasin Ayari quickly added a third with a deflected strike, setting the tone for a one-sided contest.

Charalampos Kostoulas scored Brighton’s fourth, and Jack Hinshelwood completed the rout late on. Palace substitutes Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jefferson Lerma both came close to avoiding a clean sheet defeat but were denied by the goalframe. This victory was Brighton’s first over Palace under head coach Fabian Hürzeler after four attempts, pushing the south-coast side to 16 points from seven games.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s struggles continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United at Elland Road. Bryan Mbeumo’s goal gave Leeds a half-time lead, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s powerful finish early in the second half earned United a point. The draw extended United’s winless Premier League run to five matches.

Leeds supporters had hoped for a first home win against Manchester United in 45 years, given United’s poor recent form under Michael Carrick. The match was a physical derby, with neither side producing much quality, but both matched each other’s intensity.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth won 2-0 at home against Sunderland. Evanilson scored and assisted in the victory, marking his 100th career goal. He set up Marcus Tavernier’s opener and later capitalised on a defensive error to double the advantage. Sunderland’s Kevin Danso was sent off in the 17th minute after fouling Evanilson.

Nottingham Forest was set to face Arsenal later on Sunday, rounding out the day’s Premier League fixtures.
