The Arizona Cardinals have placed defensive tackle P.J. Mustipher on injured reserve (IR) due to a severe foot injury sustained during the team's first padded practice of training camp.
The Cardinals made the move on Saturday, marking the second player to be placed on IR in two days. Cornerback Jaden Davis was also placed on IR the day before. Mustipher will miss the entire regular season as a result of the timing of the transaction.
The Cardinals have been dealing with injuries at the defensive tackle position throughout training camp. With Mustipher out, the team has signed former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin.
Martin, a 6'5" and 330-pound defensive tackle, was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. He played two seasons at Western Kentucky, appearing in 28 games and recording 62 total tackles, 4 sacks, and 6 tackles for loss.
Martin's NFL career has been marked by inconsistency. He was initially drafted by the Lions but was waived after appearing in just three games. He was later claimed by the Kansas City Chiefs and placed on their practice squad, before being claimed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and waived after one game.
Martin was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders in May of this year, but was waived with an injury designation. He has appeared in six NFL games, with one start, and has recorded 4 total tackles.
The Cardinals' decision to sign Martin suggests that they are looking for depth at the defensive tackle position. With Mustipher out for the season, Martin will likely be expected to contribute immediately.
The Cardinals will open their regular season on September 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers. With Mustipher out and Martin expected to take his place, the team will be looking to get off to a strong start.
