The Florida Gators still have no clear starter at quarterback, with just four weeks left until the start of the 2026 college football season.
Fall camp is about to begin, and after that, the first week of games will follow. This leaves quarterbacks with limited time to improve their chances of starting. Florida needs to replace DJ Lagway, who left for Baylor.
Coach Jon Sumrall discussed the battle for the starting quarterback position at SEC media days. He stated that while the program doesn't have a Heisman Trophy candidate, it does have quarterbacks with good enough talent to win with.
The two main contenders are Tramell Jones and Aaron Philo. Jones was a true freshman in 2025 and backed up Lagway for most of last season. He did see some field time in a win against Long Island, passing for 131 yards with two touchdowns.
Palo's competition, Aaron Philo, has the slight advantage at this point. He backed up Haynes King at Georgia Tech for two seasons and will be joined by his former offensive coordinator, Buster Faulkner. In the limited time he's seen on the field, Philo has thrown for 938 yards with two touchdowns to three interceptions during his career.
The position battle should just be heating up as fall camp approaches. It remains to be seen whether Philo's experience will give him the edge he needs to secure the starting spot.
