Talladega Superspeedway to attempt record for largest gathering of “Ricky Bobbys” during NASCAR weekend

Talladega Superspeedway is preparing to attempt a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of “Ricky Bobbys” during this weekend’s NASCAR events. The attempt will take place after Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race, with fans invited to wear an “approved costume” provided by NASCAR to count towards the total.

The event celebrates the 20th anniversary of the racing comedy “Talladega Nights,” which stars Will Ferrell as Ricky Bobby, a character synonymous with NASCAR culture. The track is using the milestone to create a unique tribute to one of the sport’s most recognizable films.

Jeff Gluck, a motorsports writer for The Athletic, shared details on X, explaining that participants must don the official costume supplied by NASCAR for their presence to be officially recorded. “This weekend at Talladega they will attempt to set the Guinness World Record for ‘Largest Gathering of Ricky Bobbys’ after the O’Reilly race on Saturday. A note says ‘participants must wear the approved costume provided by NASCAR to count toward the record,’” Gluck wrote.

Alongside the world record attempt, Talladega Superspeedway is hosting Dega Con, a festival spanning the entire NASCAR race weekend from October 23 to 25. The event includes a screening of “Talladega Nights” as well as a meet-and-greet with cast members from the film, offering fans multiple ways to engage with the anniversary celebrations.

The weekend’s racing action carries significant weight in the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, with three races left and seven drivers within striking distance of the championship lead. Kyle Larson holds the top spot in the Chase standings but lost ground last weekend after finishing 34th at Phoenix, surrendering 44 points to his rivals.

Christopher Bell moved into second place, trailing Larson by just five points following a fourth-place finish at Phoenix. Chase Briscoe, who won at Talladega last fall, sits third, 24 points behind Larson. Denny Hamlin, the Chase leader at the start of the playoffs, is fourth, 31 points adrift.

The unpredictability of Talladega Superspeedway’s 2.66-mile layout means Sunday’s YellaWood 500 could shake up the championship standings dramatically. The convergence of the record attempt with a critical race weekend adds an unusual layer of excitement for fans and participants alike.
