Jeff Bezos Takes Aim at Liverpool Stake as FSG Nears $6 Billion Deal

Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, is reportedly set to acquire a significant stake in Liverpool Football Club, with the deal valued at around $6 billion.

A consortium spearheaded by Amit Bhatia, featuring Bezos, is nearing an agreement to purchase a roughly one-third stake in the club. The ownership share would see Bezos join a group of high-net-worth individuals, including Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the club's majority owner since 2010, has acknowledged that a group has made an approach to purchase a stake in Liverpool. A statement from FSG read: "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

The deal is expected to be finalized soon, with FSG reportedly gearing up to unveil the transaction as early as this week. The trio of Bezos, Saverin, and Bhatia's investment would value Liverpool at around $6 billion, marking it as one of the most lucrative transactions in the sport's history.

American ownership has expanded dramatically throughout the Premier League, with half of the division's 20 clubs now primarily controlled by U.S.-based investors. This trend has been ongoing, with Liverpool's existing owners, FSG, also owning the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball.

Bezos has previously considered major sporting acquisitions, particularly in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, but eventually decided against pursuing either opportunity. Saverin, meanwhile, was involved in a consortium that launched an unsuccessful takeover bid for Chelsea during the 2022 sale process initiated by Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

On the field, Liverpool last secured the Premier League championship in 2024/25 but now confront a period of rebuilding after the dismissal of head coach Arne Slot and the exit of Mohamed Salah. The Reds have brought in Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, and Ronald Araujo on loan, with Bradley Barcola identified as a key attacking objective.

The deal would see three of the world's wealthiest individuals become co-owners of the Reds, one of English soccer's most decorated clubs. The financial backing could be a significant boost for Liverpool, with the club's new owners potentially willing to invest in new talent and infrastructure.

The transaction is expected to be finalized in the coming days, with the schedule potentially slipping into next week. If finalized, the arrangement would see Bezos, Saverin, and Bhatia's investment value Liverpool at around $6 billion, marking it as one of the most lucrative transactions in the sport's history.
