There's a quarterback in the NFL who thinks he's better than everyone else. Will Levis, the Tennessee Titans' 33rd overall pick in the 2023 draft, has been making headlines with his bold claims.
Levis, who's currently fighting for the backup job, isn't worried about winning anyone's approval. He wants to play, and he believes he's one of the best quarterbacks in the league. "There are not 32 quarterbacks in this league better than me," he said Saturday. "I know that for sure."
The Titans drafted Levis as a prototypical quarterback at 6-foot-4 and 229 pounds with all the physical tools. However, his playing record isn't exactly impressive, with a 5-16 starting record and a 61% completion rate. He's also thrown four pick-6s in 2024, the most for the franchise since 1997.
Levis appeared ready to back up Cam Ward until he announced he was having season-ending surgery due to a sprained AC joint in his right throwing shoulder. The surgery left no competition for Ward, and the Titans went 3-14 with Brian Callahan fired early in his second season.
Now, Levis is competing with Mitchell Trubisky to back up Ward. The Titans could keep Levis as the third quarterback for depth or trade him if he plays well enough this preseason to attract an offer. Levis has been working hard to prove himself, saying, "I know I put the tape out there already that I'm a dang good quarterback in this league. And I'm even better than I ever have been."
Tennessee coach Robert Saleh has been impressed with Levis' progress, saying, "I think he's doing a really nice job. He's competing his butt off, he's asking the right questions in meetings. … He's trending in the right direction." Levis has also matured since his arrival in the NFL, saying, "I've definitely turned into a man, and there's still a lot of growing that I need to do."
The Titans put up a pair of covered grandstands at the back of their practice fields for the first of seven practices open to fans this training camp. The event was a hit, with 1,300 tickets distributed for Saturday. Fans got to see Levis and the rest of the team in action, and they're likely to be watching his progress closely.
The next few weeks will be crucial for Levis as he fights for a spot on the Titans' roster. If he continues to impress, he might just find himself starting for a team other than the Titans.
