Ibrahima Konaté grew up in Paris and began his career at Sochaux before moving to RB Leipzig in 2017. He developed into a fast, powerful centre-back in the Bundesliga.
Liverpool signed him in 2021. He won the League Cup and FA Cup in his first season and the Premier League in 2024/25, forming a strong partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
Konaté was part of France’s squad at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. He joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in summer 2026.
Playing style
Konaté is a fast, powerful centre-back who is dominant in the air and strong in one-on-one duels. His recovery pace allows his team to defend with a high line, and he is increasingly comfortable carrying the ball forward. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk was one of the best in the Premier League, combining Konaté’s athleticism with Van Dijk’s reading of the game. Injuries have interrupted some of his seasons, but when fit he is one of the best defenders in the world.
International career
Konaté made his France debut in 2022 and played at the 2022 World Cup, where France reached the final, and at Euro 2024, where they reached the semi-finals.
Career in numbers
