The Seattle Seahawks expect running back Zach Charbonnet to make his season debut in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, offering a much-needed boost to an offense that has struggled to find consistency. Head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed Charbonnet has a good chance to return after missing the first six games while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in last season’s playoff win over San Francisco.
Seattle enters Week 7 with a 3-3 record following a narrow overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. Three of their defeats this season have come by three points or fewer, indicating the team is close to turning things around despite a faltering running game. Macdonald acknowledged after the Denver loss that the Seahawks have not created the run game they want, which has left quarterback Sam Darnold exposed to too many hits.
Charbonnet’s return could alter that dynamic. The running back was designated to return to practice on October 1, starting the 21-day window for a comeback. He did not play in Week 6 against Denver, as the quick turnaround for Thursday Night Football did not allow enough time to properly prepare. Macdonald said the plan at that time was not to play Charbonnet, but the full week leading up to the Chiefs game offers more preparation time.
Seattle’s running back situation has been thin this season, especially with rookie Jadarian Price on injured reserve. Charbonnet’s absence has left the Seahawks without two of their top options in the backfield. Before his injury, Charbonnet had demonstrated his value by rushing for 730 yards and scoring 12 touchdowns last season.
His return will not instantly solve every issue, but it could take some of the pressure off Darnold by providing a more reliable running threat. That might help Seattle avoid predictable passing situations that have made their offense easier to defend.
The matchup against the Chiefs is significant for Seattle, who will have nearly two weeks to prepare after their Week 6 loss. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Charbonnet has a legitimate chance to make his season debut in this game. If he is cleared to play, the Seahawks could enter Week 7 with the offensive upgrade they have been seeking.
The Seahawks’ hopes now rest partly on Charbonnet’s impact against one of the league’s top teams.
