Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham keeps starting QB choice under wraps before Indiana clash

Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is keeping fans guessing over who will start at quarterback against Indiana this Saturday at Michigan Stadium. The Wolverines face the defending national champions in a game that kicks off the second half of their 2025 season, but Whittingham has made no public indication whether sophomore Bryce Underwood or freshman Tommy Carr will take the first snap.

Whittingham confirmed on Monday that his coaching staff has already decided on a starter. Underwood, the nation’s top-rated recruit in the 2025 class with 19 career starts under his belt, struggled during the first half of last Saturday’s 21-18 win over Penn State. Michigan managed only 80 yards of offense and Underwood threw two interceptions before Whittingham replaced him at halftime with Carr.

Carr’s entrance sparked the Wolverines. The defense forced three turnovers in the second half, and Michigan’s running game picked up momentum. Carr led three touchdown drives and capped the scoring with a 12-yard rushing touchdown. The crowd at Michigan Stadium and the players themselves appeared energized by the switch.

Carr carries a strong Michigan football lineage. He is the grandson of Lloyd Carr, who coached the Wolverines for 13 seasons, including their 1997 AP national championship campaign. Carr’s grandfather on the defensive side is Tom Curtis, a former Michigan All-American defensive back. His older brother, CJ Carr, is the current starting quarterback at Notre Dame.

Michigan enters Saturday’s game with a 4-2 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the Big Ten. Indiana stands at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Hoosiers are coming off a narrow 19-15 home loss to Ohio State and are among the most balanced teams in the country. Indiana ranks 25th in scoring offense, averaging 36.6 points per game, and is fourth in scoring defense, allowing just 12.9 points on average. They also hold the No. 4 spot nationally in rush defense, conceding only 75.4 yards per game.

The strong Indiana run defense presents a tough test for Carr, who has yet to start a game at the college level. Michigan’s coaching staff will have to weigh the potential upside Carr showed against the experience Underwood brings, especially considering the Hoosiers' defensive capabilities.

Michigan leads the all-time series against Indiana 62-11, but the Hoosiers won the most recent meeting 20-15 on November 9, 2024. Kickoff is scheduled for noon on Saturday, October 24, and the game will be broadcast on FOX and 94.7 FM.

Whittingham declined to reveal who will start at quarterback, maintaining the suspense heading into a critical Big Ten matchup. The Wolverines will need to find their rhythm quickly against a disciplined Indiana defense if they hope to improve their conference standing.
