The 24-year-old right-hander Brendan Beck of the Yankees prospect set a new career high with 12 strikeouts in six scoreless innings, leading the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders to an 8-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings in the series opener.
Beck's impressive performance on Tuesday night at PNC Field helped the RailRiders take an early lead. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre started the scoring in the third, thanks to Marco Luciano's double and Oswaldo Cabrera's RBI single.
The RailRiders broke the game open in the fifth. After Duke Ellis reached on a fielding error, he stole second and third. J.C. Escarra hit a two-run homer, followed by an RBI single from Yanquiel Fernández, extending the lead to 4-0.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre offense continued to add runs in the sixth and seventh. Christian Bethancourt scored on an RBI single by Kenedy Corona in the sixth. In the seventh, Cabrera and Fernández opened with singles, and Tyler Hardman hit an RBI double.
The Rochester Red Wings finally got on the board in the eighth, scoring two runs. Phillip Glasser reached on a fielder's choice, and Trey Lipscomb doubled. Riley Adams drove in both with a single to center, and Cayden Wallace hit his second double of the night to bring Adams home.
Lipscomb finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored, while Wallace went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Adams drove in two runs with his eighth-inning single. Champlain took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Beck's 12 strikeouts in six innings are a testament to his growing skill as a pitcher. With this performance, he's sure to be on the radar for future opportunities.
