Jaguars rookie linebacker Tyler Spence is one of the players to keep an eye on during training camp.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are gearing up for their training camp, and several players are poised to make a name for themselves. While many fans are focused on the top players, there are a few lesser-known players who could be worth watching.
One of the linebackers to watch is Branson Combs, who has been making waves in the Jaguars' offseason programs. According to John Shipley of Jaguars on SI, Combs was a "true riser" and is expected to compete for the starting job.
Combs' background as a special teams contributor last season has given him a leg up on other players. He played 193 snaps over 11 games, contributing to four of the six different phases. Now, he has the opportunity to carve out a more significant role defensively.
The Jaguars' linebacking corps is already looking strong, with Foye Oluokun and Ventrell Miller expected to start alongside each other. However, Combs is very much in the mix for playing time as well. Head coach Liam Coen has praised Combs' athleticism and ability to do multiple things in terms of coverage.
Coen said, "Just low-key, he's pretty athletic, like he's explosive… He can do multiple different things in terms of coverage abilities, whether it's in man or zone. I like him in coverage. So being able to communicate at a high level is what he's needed those reps." These comments suggest that Combs has a good chance of making the team and contributing to the Jaguars' defense.
The Jaguars' training camp is set to begin soon, and fans will be eager to see how Combs and the rest of the team perform. With Combs in the mix for playing time, it will be interesting to see how he stacks up against the other linebackers.
