Kyle Larson’s hold on the top spot in NASCAR’s driver rankings has loosened as the competition tightens ahead of the Talladega race. While Larson remains No. 1, the gap between him and the rest of the top 10 has narrowed, with Chase Briscoe and Christopher Bell closing in rapidly.
The rankings, updated this week, do not rely on points but rather on position shifts among drivers. This means the difference between first and fourth is just three spots, signaling how close the field has become. “We just rank ’em, folks,” the source from The Daytona Beach News-Journal explained. “Without a points value attached, we can’t and don’t see how close things might be here on a weekly basis. But rest assured, it’s damn close.”
Larson, who has been dominant for much of the season, experienced his first notable slip recently. Despite this, uprooting him from the top position is still considered unlikely. However, Briscoe, riding a strong wave of momentum himself, is poised to challenge Larson’s lead. Briscoe won last year’s fall Talladega race, adding fuel to his confidence as the drivers prepare for this weekend’s event.
Christopher Bell sits third in the rankings and is closely trailing Larson in the official points standings. Ryan Blaney, who has recovered from a slow start to the season, ranks fourth. Both drivers have shown consistent form and could influence the leaderboard as well.
Tyler Reddick, fifth in the list, has recently made a comeback, highlighted by his Phoenix win on October 18. That victory ended a title drought for Reddick, who “forgotten how champagne tasted,” NASCAR’s official account noted. His resurgence adds another layer to the competition as Talladega looms.
Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano occupy the sixth and seventh positions, with Hamlin expected to capitalize soon and Logano enjoying a strong points haul from Phoenix. Austin Cindric, known for his solid performance on plate tracks, ranks eighth and is expected to run near the front at Talladega.
Chase Elliott, back in form, holds ninth place. Ty Gibbs rounds out the top 10, maintaining his spot at the bottom of this weekly ranking effort.
The championship battle remains open as the series heads to Talladega, a track known for its unpredictability and high-speed pack racing. NASCAR itself tweeted, “The championship battle is wide open as we head to the track where anything can happen.”
The tightening of the top 10 reflects the increasing intensity of the playoff run. While Larson still leads, drivers like Briscoe, Bell, and Reddick have demonstrated they can close the gap quickly. With Talladega’s reputation for chaos and surprise outcomes, the next race could shake up the rankings further.
Larson’s grip has slipped, but no one has overtaken him yet. Meanwhile, the rest of the field is closing in, setting up a tense showdown at one of NASCAR’s most challenging venues.
