Florida hosts South Carolina in homecoming game after first loss under coach Sumrall

Florida’s first loss of the season hangs over The Swamp as the No. 15 Gators prepare to host South Carolina in their homecoming game on Saturday. The Gators, now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play, fell 45-17 at No. 16 Missouri on October 3, ending their unbeaten start under first-year coach Jon Sumrall.

Sumrall addressed the setback directly, saying, “Adversity which we have just faced, and we are facing right now, reveals more about who you are and your character than success. Anybody can have the right attitude when things are going good. How do you move forward and continue to churn ahead and try to get better in maybe some adverse times after a game like last Saturday says more about you than anything.”

The Gators have a strong record in homecoming games, winning 32 of 37 since 1989. This year’s event will draw its 22nd straight sellout crowd at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, capacity 88,548, in Gainesville. The game will also celebrate Florida’s 1996 national championship team and the 1966 squad that featured Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier. Despite the festivities, players remain focused on the matchup rather than the celebration.

“I really haven’t thought too much about homecoming,” Florida starting safety DJ Coleman said. “I’m really trying to win the game.”

South Carolina arrives at The Swamp struggling, having lost three in a row and sitting at 2-3 overall and winless in SEC play at 0-3. Their latest defeat came in overtime, a 35-34 loss to Kentucky. The Gamecocks will look to their dual-threat quarterback LaNorris Sellers to spark an offense that has produced 1,059 passing yards and eight touchdowns, alongside 391 rushing yards and one touchdown for Sellers this season.

The game kicks off at 12:45 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 10, with national coverage on SEC Network. Taylor Zarzour and Matt Stinchcomb will be on the call, joined on the sidelines by Tori Petry. Fans can also stream the game via ESPN+ and Fubo, which offers a free trial for new subscribers.

As of the latest odds from BetMGM on October 9, Florida enters as an 11.5-point favorite, with a total over/under set at 58.5 points. The moneyline reflects Florida at -450 and South Carolina at +350.

The Gators will be looking to bounce back quickly from their first loss under Sumrall and maintain their strong home record, while South Carolina aims to halt a three-game skid and gain traction in the SEC.
