Si Woo Kim was charged a $9 toll when he unknowingly drove into Canada prior to the 2026 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.
The 2026 Rocket Classic is taking place at the Detroit Golf Club, a well-known course in the United States.
Si Woo Kim was staying in downtown Detroit and had planned to meet fellow Tour pro Michael Kim for a Korean barbecue dinner. He typed the restaurant name "Daebak" into his GPS and drove to the closest location, unaware that there was a common name for the restaurant in both Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
A Daebak restaurant is located in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, while another is in Windsor, Ontario.
Kim was eventually met by eight Canadian border-patrol agents, who inspected his courtesy car, and he was allowed back through after a brief delay. He made it to dinner, albeit 90 minutes late.
The Canadian border-patrol agent asked Si Woo Kim if he was going to win the Rocket Classic.
"If you let me go through," Si Woo Kim said with a laugh, "I'll win the Rocket."
The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is having some fun with the story, posting on its entrance sign: "FREE TOLL FOR SI WOO KIM."
The tunnel's CEO, Tal Czudner, even delivered a personal invitation, from the grounds of Detroit Golf Club this week.
"But please bring your passport," Czudner said. "Bring this tournament home."
Si Woo Kim was doing his best at the tournament. He started Saturday's third round at 5 under, five shots off the lead.
Michael Kim, who shared the Si Woo story, started Saturday's round at 8 under, two shots back.
It's not the first time Kim has made headlines for his golfing antics.
The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel's gesture is a lighthearted way to poke fun at the situation and welcome Si Woo Kim back to Canada.
The story serves as a reminder that even professional golfers can make mistakes.
The free toll is a small gesture, but it's one that has brought some levity to the situation.
Si Woo Kim will have to navigate the tunnel again to get to the Canadian side for the rest of the tournament.
