Sam LaPorta cleared for Lions training camp return
Sam LaPorta has the green light to rejoin the Detroit Lions at training camp after recovering from a back injury suffered last season.
LaPorta underwent a microdiscectomy after he suffered a herniated disc in Week 10 that ended his 2025 season. The injury limited his production, with 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns in nine games.
As a rookie in 2023, LaPorta set an NFL record for most receptions by a rookie tight end, with 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. He followed that up with 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
LaPorta's performance was expected to slide with the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who left to become the Chicago Bears' head coach. The Lions hired Drew Petzing, who previously served as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator, to lead the offense.
Petzing's 13 personnel (one running back, three tight ends) strategy could signal bigger things for LaPorta. The Lions used this personnel more than any other team in the NFL from 2023-25, according to TruMedia.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that LaPorta was fully cleared earlier this month after recovering from his back injury. This development is a boost for the Lions, who are looking to improve their offense this season.
LaPorta's return to the field is expected to provide a significant boost to the Lions' tight end position. With a new coaching staff and a revamped offense, LaPorta will look to get back to his rookie form and help the Lions compete in the highly competitive NFC North.
LaPorta's road to recovery has been a long one, but he is finally cleared to rejoin his teammates at training camp. The Lions will look to get their tight end back on the field as soon as possible, with the start of the 2026 season just around the corner.
