The Phillies' Walk-Off Fiasco: Dodgers Even Series
The Philadelphia Phillies' promising walk-off situation imploded in a befuddling baserunning blunder, allowing the Los Angeles Dodgers to even the three-game set in a 2-1 loss.
Alec Bohm delivered the early lead with a single in the first inning, but the Phillies couldn't capitalize on Zack Wheeler's dominant outing. Wheeler, who fell one strikeout shy of becoming the second Phillie ever to throw 10+ strikeouts in four straight starts, surrendered a two-run homer to Max Muncy in the fourth inning.
Wheeler's impressive performance included nine K's across seven innings. Dodgers' lefty, Justin Wrobleski, went toe-to-toe with Wheeler, notching seven punch outs of his own.
The Phillies' only other scoring chance came courtesy of a leadoff single by Bohm in the ninth inning. After a three-pitch strikeout of Edmundo Sosa, JT Realmuto smoked a 3-1 slider from Tanner Scott up the left field line to put runners on second and third with one out.
However, Bohm's replacement, Justin Crawford, caught Brandon Marsh grounded to third in a rundown, while Realmuto was tagged out easily to end the game on a double play. The play was widely criticized, with John Kruk reacting with shock and dismay.
The Phillies' loss marked a disappointing end to a promising night for the team. Trea Turner showed off his range with a couple of impressive plays, while Derek Hill made a great throw in the third inning that saved a run when Shohei Ohtani tried to stretch a single into a double.
Aaron Nola is set to face lefty, Eric Lauer, in the series decider tomorrow night. The outcome of the game will have significant implications for the teams' standings in the NL East.
