Hakan Çalhanoğlu was born in Mannheim to Turkish parents and began his career at Karlsruher SC before moving to Hamburg and then Bayer Leverkusen. He became known as one of Europe’s best free-kick takers.
He joined AC Milan in 2017 and spent four seasons there before crossing the city to Inter in 2021 on a free transfer. At Inter, Simone Inzaghi moved him into a deeper playmaking role, where he dictated the tempo and took penalties. He won Serie A in 2023/24.
Çalhanoğlu captains Turkey and led them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
Playing style
Çalhanoğlu began his career as an attacking midfielder known for his free kicks and long-range shots, but at Inter he has become a deep-lying playmaker. He sits in front of the defence, receives the ball and dictates the tempo with accurate short and long passes. He is also Inter’s penalty-taker, with a very high conversion rate. His transformation into a regista showed his tactical intelligence and was one of the keys to Inter’s success under Simone Inzaghi.
International career
Çalhanoğlu made his Turkey debut in 2013 and has won more than 90 caps. He captains the national team and led them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, their best result at a major tournament in years.
