Amadou Onana was born in Dakar, Senegal, and grew up partly in Belgium, where he developed in the youth system of Zulte Waregem before moving to Germany with Hoffenheim and then Hamburg.
A season at Lille in 2021/22 made his name, and Everton signed him in 2022. His athleticism, reach and ball-winning ability made him one of the most sought-after young midfielders in England, and Aston Villa bought him in 2024.
At 1.95 m, Onana covers huge areas of the pitch, breaks up attacks and drives forward with the ball. He has represented Belgium since 2022 and played at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.
Career in numbers
Across 6 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2020/21, Onana has played 213 matches and scored 17 goals for 4 clubs. His best scoring return came in 2024/25: 5 goals in 34 appearances for Aston Villa. His busiest campaign was 2021/22, with 43 appearances.
