Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll Homer in 7-Run 7th as Diamondbacks Down Guardians 12-8
The Arizona Diamondbacks sent a clear message to the rest of the National League with a 12-8 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night, thanks in large part to a seven-run seventh inning that gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Geraldo Perdomo led off the frame with a first-pitch drive over the right-field wall off Hunter Gaddis, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. They would score their next six runs with two outs, with Ildemaro Vargas driving in a run with an RBI single, Brian McCann doubling in two, and Carroll launching a three-run homer to center.
Perdomo's night was one for the books, as he not only homered but also drove in three runs and finished with four hits in the game. He's now 6 for 10 with four RBIs in the first two games of the series.
Nolan Arenado also went deep for the Diamondbacks, hitting a solo shot in the eighth inning. The win was the fourth straight for Arizona, who now hold the second wild-card spot in the National League.
Cleveland, on the other hand, struggled to find their footing, falling to .500 for the first time since May 10. Rhys Hoskins and Chase DeLauter homered for the Guardians, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Diamondbacks' big seventh inning.
The Guardians did mount a rally in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to cut the lead to two. However, it was too little, too late, as the Diamondbacks were able to hold on for the win.
Gerardo Carrillo got the win for Arizona, throwing two scoreless innings in relief. The Diamondbacks sent 10 to the plate in the seventh, and it paid off in a big way.
Up next for the Diamondbacks is a series finale against the Guardians on Sunday, with right-hander Merrill Kelly slated to take the mound. Kelly has a 4.36 ERA on the season and is looking to bounce back from a tough outing in his last start.
