Panthers' Pass Rusher Injured on Day 1 of Camp

Panthers pass rusher Nic Scourton suffered a right knee injury on the first day of training camp, forcing him to be carted off the field. The extent of the injury is currently unknown, but it has raised concerns about the team's defensive depth.

The Panthers are already dealing with the loss of starting right tackle Taylor Moton, who was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list earlier this week. Moton's injury is expected to keep him out for an extended period.

Scourton's injury could be particularly significant, as he was expected to be a key player on the Panthers' defense this season. The 22-year-old second-round pick from 2025 finished last season as a starter, collecting five sacks, 27 tackles, and one forced fumble. He was expected to line up opposite free-agent pass rusher Jaelan Phillips.

The Panthers' defense is already facing significant challenges, with both starting defensive tackles, Tershawn Wharton and Bobby Brown III, placed on the non-football injury list. Starting cornerback Jaycee Horn is also currently on the non-football injury list, although his injury is not believed to be serious.

Scourton's injury would leave a big hole on the Panthers' defense, particularly if it is a serious one. Pat Jones, who missed time last season with a back injury, is likely to be the first option to replace him. The Panthers also have 2025 third-rounder Princely Umanmielen, Trevis Gipson, and Thomas Incoom, but the latter two were primarily special teamers a year ago in Carolina.

Head coach Dave Canales did not confirm the severity of Scourton's injury but did confirm that he would need his right leg imaged for a possible ligament tear. The Panthers will need to wait for further updates on Scourton's condition before assessing the impact of the injury on their defense.

The loss of Scourton would be a significant blow to the Panthers, who were already facing significant challenges in their pursuit of another NFC South title. The team's offseason moves were aimed at maintaining their momentum, but injuries to key players could set them back.
