The rear tire changer Bryan Backus was bent over the right rear of Brent Crews' No. 19 car when Nicholas Sanchez's machine slammed into it, stopping within inches of the crewman. Had Backus reacted a second or two slower, the O'Reilly Series Nu Way 225 on Saturday would have been remembered for something far worse than a red flag.
The crash happened at the end of the first stage, when the entire field dove onto pit road for fresh tires. It began with Rajah Caruth's No. 88 car getting spun out. What followed was a chain reaction that clogged the road completely and forced officials to halt the race.
