Nico Iamaleava set for breakout Week 6 as UCLA faces Oregon in high-scoring showdown

Nico Iamaleava is set to take a major step forward in Week 6 as UCLA prepares to face Oregon in what promises to be a high-scoring battle. After a season where the Bruins have relied heavily on their ground game, Iamaleava is expected to shoulder a bigger offensive load to keep pace with Oregon’s attack.

UCLA’s offense has leaned on its running backs, running the ball on 65 percent of standard downs, ranking 19th in the FBS. Their rushing success rate leads the nation at 58 percent, and they average 7.5 yards per carry. Passing to running backs accounts for 24.5 percent of their throws, placing them 18th nationally in that category. So far, Iamaleava’s role has been more about managing the game than making big plays. But against Oregon, that dynamic is likely to change.

Yahoo analysts Eric Froton and Nick Bromberg note that UCLA won’t be able to dictate the pace as they have earlier in the season. Instead, they’ll need Iamaleava to step up against a Ducks defense that struggles against deep passes. Oregon ranks 129th in pass plays of 20 or more yards and dead last nationally in quarterback rating allowed. Froton predicts Iamaleava will be heavily involved, potentially nearing 30 fantasy points in a competitive, back-and-forth scoring affair.

The matchup pits a bruising, efficient UCLA rushing attack against an Oregon defense that has struggled in the passing game. It suggests Iamaleava will need to exploit the Ducks’ poor secondary to keep the Bruins competitive.

Elsewhere in college fantasy football, Froton also spotlights Virginia Tech’s Jeffrey Overton Jr., who has taken over as the team’s lead back in dominant fashion. Overton averages 5.9 yards per carry, outpacing deposed starter Marcellous Hawkins’s 4.1 yards. Overton averages 4.5 yards after contact, more than Hawkins’s total yards per carry. Virginia Tech ranks near the bottom nationally in yards before contact and yards per successful rush, and Cal’s defense, which allows 187 rushing yards per game and ranks 126th in explosive play rate allowed, presents a ripe opportunity. Froton expects Overton to score twice and rack up more than 20 fantasy points against Cal.

Meanwhile, Bromberg advises caution regarding the marquee Alabama-Georgia game, warning that Hurricane Isaias could turn the contest into a slog. Both teams excel but lack standout fantasy options, and the rain could slow passing games significantly, reducing fantasy potential.

In Ohio State’s backfield, Bromberg singles out Ja’Kobi Jackson as a consistent fantasy scorer. Though Bo Jackson leads the team in carries and yards, Ja’Kobi has six touchdowns on 45 carries and has scored in every game this season. With Maryland up next, Bromberg expects him to find the end zone once again.

For UCLA, the Week 6 match against Oregon will be a test of whether Iamaleava can transition from game manager to primary playmaker in the Bruins’ offense. The Ducks’ defensive weaknesses suggest a chance for him to shine in a shootout. The latest assessments from Yahoo analysts place him among the top breakout candidates in college fantasy football this week.
