Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels and coach Mike Norvell enter the 2026 season with something significant in common: both need this year to work.
They both need this year to work.
For Daniels, a graduate transfer with one final season of eligibility, it is an opportunity to prove he can be more than a capable starter. For Norvell, it may be his best chance to restore momentum to a program that has endured back-to-back losing seasons and growing questions about his future in Tallahassee.
The encouraging sign for Norvell is his return to play-calling duties and the belief that he has found the right quarterback to operate his offense.
Daniels arrives in Tallahassee with plenty of experience but still something to prove. He has started 23 games during his college career, compiling a 5-18 record at Stanford before spending last season at Auburn, where he took over as the starter for the Tigers' final three games after redshirting.
Norvell has long favored athletic quarterbacks who can create both through the air and on the ground. Former QB Jordan Travis helped elevate the Seminoles during the program's resurgence, but since Travis' departure, FSU has struggled to find a comparable answer at the position.
Recent transfer additions have not delivered as expected. DJ Uiagalelei failed to meet lofty expectations, and Tommy Castellanos was unable to provide the spark Florida State hoped for last season.
Daniels represents another swing in the portal, but unlike some of his predecessors, he arrives with little national hype. Even after winning the starting job over Kevin Sperry, a quarterback recruited by Norvell and his staff, Daniels has largely flown under the radar.
Daniels is well aware of the outside perception. "You see that stuff every single day," Daniels said during the ACC Kickoff. "What separates the best from the worst is how you handle it. I saw that. I don't care. What shows is the actions on the field. Using that as bulletin board material? Yeah, that's in the back of my mind."
That mindset may be exactly what Florida State needs. Daniels possesses a calm, mature presence that comes with being a Stanford graduate, but he also carries the competitive edge of a player still trying to define his legacy.
The challenge will not be easy. Florida State faces a demanding schedule that includes games against SMU, Miami, and Alabama, among others. If Daniels is going to break through, he will have to do it against some of the nation's best competition.
No one is suggesting Daniels must become a Heisman Trophy candidate or the top quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft. But for Florida State, competent and consistent quarterback play could be the difference between another disappointing season and a return to national relevance.
Norvell believes in Daniels' potential, saying, "I mean, he definitely has the right edge and the things that I want to see from him, and really all players on our team, just to go prove and show all of who they are."
