Lionel Messi scores and assists in emotional farewell match for Argentina before 85,000 fans

Lionel Messi ended his Argentina career with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Benin at the Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires, watched by around 85,000 fans. The night was charged with emotion as Messi took his final bow for the Albiceleste after 21 years, visibly moved by the occasion and the absence of his late father, Jorge.

Messi entered the pitch alongside his three children as the Argentine national anthem played. Fans had travelled from across the world to witness the farewell of their number 10, creating an atmosphere thick with reverence and anticipation. Before the match, a giant number 10 shirt emblazoned with “Gracias” appeared at the stadium’s center amid chants, light shows, and fireworks.

The first half was difficult for Argentina. Despite their status as clear favourites, and Benin’s low FIFA ranking of 93rd, the visitors held their ground. Messi misfired a few passes and squandered a good chance, while Benin’s attacking midfielder Junior Olaitan was a persistent threat. Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, saw his side struggle to break through.

After the break, Messi took control. In the 48th minute, he swung in a corner that Nicolás Otamendi converted, marking Otamendi’s own farewell match for Argentina. Thirteen minutes later, Messi provided a second assist for Nico Paz, whose long-range strike gave Argentina a 2-0 lead. Messi then sealed the victory in the 71st minute by calmly slotting a penalty into the top corner. He also hit the post and missed other chances but remained the standout player.

The match was not without distraction. A drone display over the stadium generated mixed reactions. While some images—such as one showing Messi holding the World Cup in the Buenos Aires sky—were warmly received, a marketing stunt by insurer Sancor Seguros backfired. Instead of further tributes to Messi, the company’s logo appeared, prompting boos and insults from the crowd.

Benin’s respect for Messi was evident in their gesture at the pre-match exchange of pennants. Their captain, Sessi D’Almeida, presented Messi with a golden statuette inspired by the Dahomey Amazons and a letter, symbolising their admiration.

Messi’s farewell closes a chapter that began more than two decades ago. He finishes his Argentina career with 208 appearances, 126 goals, and 67 assists, along with the major trophies secured in recent years. The Monumental was filled with tears and applause as the final whistle blew, a last tribute to one of football’s greatest.
