Lincoln-Way East High School on probation until 2027 after racial taunts at football game against Homewood-Flossmoor fans

Lincoln-Way East High School was placed on probation by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) until the end of the 2026-27 school year following an investigation into two alleged racial incidents. The decision came after a football game against Homewood-Flossmoor High School, where video footage showed Lincoln-Way East students making monkey sounds and gestures directed at Homewood-Flossmoor fans.

The probation does not bar Lincoln-Way East from participating in sports or other activities but acts as a formal warning that further violations could lead to more severe penalties. The IHSA announced the probation on Friday after completing its investigation into the incidents.

Less than two weeks after the football game incident, six students identified as involved, though not members of the football team, voluntarily withdrew from Lincoln-Way East rather than face expulsion. The school district confirmed these withdrawals but did not release names or additional details.

At a recent school board meeting, the district announced it had hired a consultant specializing in racial bias training to address the situation. Despite this step, some community members expressed dissatisfaction. Troy O’Quinn, a parent of students at Homewood-Flossmoor, spoke during public comment, calling for a formal written apology to be delivered to the entire Homewood-Flossmoor student body.

The IHSA’s investigation also looked into a separate alleged racial incident during a cross-country meet involving Lincoln-Way East. However, the association said it was "unable to corroborate any malicious language directed at anyone involved in the meet."

The district released a statement expressing appreciation for the IHSA’s thorough investigation. It said it "remains committed to fostering greater cultural understanding among students and staff and ensuring our schools are safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all."

The IHSA declined to comment further, acknowledging that the incidents might be subject to future litigation.

The probation order comes amid increased scrutiny of racial conduct at high school sporting events in Illinois. The IHSA’s action signals an intention to hold schools accountable while stopping short of more immediate sanctions such as suspension from competition.

Lincoln-Way East’s probation extends through the current school year and the next, leaving the community to reckon with the fallout and ongoing efforts to address racial concerns in its programs.
