Josh Hart stays focused on Knicks season despite contract talks delay

Josh Hart entered Knicks training camp expecting a contract extension to be settled before the season began. That hasn’t happened, and the team has now announced talks will be postponed until later this year. Despite that delay, Hart is keeping his attention on the forthcoming season.

“Not looking too much into it,” Hart said on Saturday. “Obviously we have high expectations, so it’s good there we’re able to just focus on the season and just keep things moving.”

Hart acknowledged that uncertainty over his contract had been a distraction in the past but insisted it no longer impacts his mindset. “At the end of the day I’m still under contract in New York,” he said. “We have a hell of a team that’s trying to repeat, I’m in an amazing situation, so it’s not frustrating at all.”

The veteran forward earns $20.9 million this season and holds a team option for next year. With free agency losses, especially the departure of Mitchell Robinson to the Celtics, Hart’s role on the Knicks is expected to grow.

Hart has been one of the Knicks’ most reliable rebounders, averaging just over eight boards per game since joining the team over three years ago. His intensity on the glass was a significant factor during New York’s recent title run, ending a long championship drought.

“Obviously you want to get some of those things done but if it doesn’t, it’s nothing where you lose sleep over — we’re blessed to be out here playing basketball for a living, so you just have to block out the noise and keep moving,” Hart added.

The Knicks’ decision to delay contract talks suggests the front office prioritises focus on team performance as the season kicks off. Hart’s willingness to set aside contract distractions reflects a broader intent to maintain team cohesion and competitive momentum.

With the season underway, Hart’s contributions on both ends of the floor will be under close observation as the Knicks aim to defend their recent success without key players like Robinson.

Hart remains a central figure in New York’s plans, expected to fill the void left by Robinson’s exit through his rebounding and versatile play. His steady presence could prove important as the team navigates the challenges ahead.
