The Vikings announced on Tuesday that Kyler Murray won his position battle against J.J. McCarthy and will be Minnesota's starting quarterback, effectively ending the 23-year-old's Minnesota nightmare.
The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy has made just 10 starts for the Vikings, winning six of those starts, but it clearly wasn't enough to convince Kevin O'Connell that he is the right person to lead Minnesota's offense moving forward.
McCarthy's Michigan tenure was marked by a sign-stealing scandal that began prior to the team's championship run in 2023, resulting in significant punishments from the NCAA in August 2025. The question remains how big of an advantage the scandal gave the Wolverines and their players, McCarthy included.
Despite this, the Vikings were comfortable with McCarthy's body of work at Michigan, which included a 28-1 record during his final two seasons as the school's starting quarterback. His current struggles, fairly or not, would suggest that Michigan's hidden advantage back then helped him considerably.
McCarthy's NFL career has been marked by injuries, including a torn meniscus in 2024 and a high ankle sprain in 2025, which significantly hampered his growth as an NFL quarterback. Healthy, McCarthy entered the 2025 season as the Vikings' starting quarterback, but his performance was inconsistent, throwing more interceptions (12) than touchdown passes (11).
In his first start of the 2025 season, McCarthy led the Vikings to a come-from-behind win over the Bears, earning him the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. However, his meteoric rise wouldn't last long, as he struggled in the following week's loss to the Atlanta Falcons, suffering a high ankle sprain that would sideline him for the Vikings' next five games.
After returning from injury, McCarthy had two of his best performances of the season, throwing a season-high three touchdowns during the team's 31-0 win over the Washington Commanders. However, the injury bug hit again, and McCarthy suffered a hairline fracture in his throwing hand that led to him not playing in Minnesota's Week 17 win over the Lions.
The Vikings acted quickly in terms of bringing in quarterback competition, signing Kyler Murray in the offseason. Murray's win in the position battle effectively ends McCarthy's Minnesota nightmare, but it's worth revisiting how things got to this point so quickly for a player who still has plenty of time to turn things around, whether it's in Minnesota or somewhere else.
