Manchester United to bid £42m for Sporting Lisbon winger Flavio Goncalves in January transfer window

Manchester United are preparing a £42 million bid for Sporting Lisbon winger Flavio Goncalves in the January transfer window amid their ongoing struggles to find the net this season. The Red Devils, who have scored just 15 goals in 11 games across all competitions, currently sit 13th in the Premier League after seven rounds and have only managed four goals in their last five matches. Their attacking woes have prompted the club to target fresh options to boost their forward line.

United had tried to sign a left forward in the summer but failed to complete a deal. Since then, Marcus Rashford, Matheus Cunha, and Patrick Dorgu have failed to impress in that position. Meanwhile, Dorgu has been shifted back to left-back, and Rashford’s future remains uncertain, increasing the urgency for new attacking reinforcements.

Flavio Goncalves, 19, has caught the eye of Manchester United and Chelsea, according to journalist Mark Brus writing for Caught Offside. Sporting Lisbon’s winger has made nine appearances this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist. He is noted for being fast, two-footed, and capable of scoring, qualities that have drawn interest from several Premier League clubs.

Goncalves is under contract with Sporting until 2030 and carries a €60 million release clause. Sporting are pushing to secure a new contract with a higher release clause, but progress on this front has been limited. Brus reports that the player and his representatives may hold off on signing a renewal until they see the offers that arrive in January.

United are reportedly ready to offer between €45 million and €50 million, roughly £42 million, to test Sporting’s resolve. “Chelsea and Man United have scouted Goncalves extensively and they’re now prepared to make offers directly to Sporting this January, that’s the current expectation,” one source told Brus. Sporting are reluctant to sell, hoping to eventually raise the player’s value to around €100 million.

The proposed transfer would bring a promising but relatively inexperienced winger to Old Trafford. Goncalves has yet to establish himself fully at the highest level, which carries some risk for United. The club may feel the need to also pursue a more proven attacker alongside him during the winter window.

Manchester United’s attacking issues have become a focal point this season as they try to climb out of the lower half of the Premier League table. Their failure to secure a left forward in the summer has left a gap that Goncalves could fill, but the club and fans will be watching closely to see if the Portuguese talent can adapt quickly to England’s top flight.

The January transfer window is just over two months away, with United positioning themselves to make a significant move for Goncalves. Sporting’s stance on the bid and the player’s decision on his contract renewal will be key factors in whether the transfer goes ahead.
