Jerry Jones stands by Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Christian Parker after tough loss

The Dallas Cowboys allowed 419 yards, including 241 on the ground, in a 24-16 defeat to the previously winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who started an undrafted rookie quarterback on Thursday night. The loss deepened concerns about the Cowboys’ defense, which entered the game ranked 30th in total defense and 31st against the run, but owner Jerry Jones maintained his confidence in defensive coordinator Christian Parker despite calls for change.

Jones acknowledged the team missed an opportunity to improve after the loss but rejected suggestions that Parker’s job was in immediate jeopardy. “That's a question that I think we all, if you're a Cowboy fan, realize that patience really may not be the proper term here. . . . I like a lot about what we've got. We missed a chance here to improve, and we didn't improve,” Jones said. When asked about Parker’s future, he described it as “premature” to consider a replacement.

The Cowboys hired Parker from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he served as passing game coordinator and secondary coach. He took over after two previous defensive coordinators lasted just one season following Dan Quinn’s departure at the end of the 2023 season. Under Mike Zimmer in 2024, Dallas ranked 31st in points allowed and 28th in yards allowed. In 2025 under Matt Eberflus, the defense slipped further to 32nd in points and 30th in yards allowed.

Jones singled out the run defense as the area of greatest concern. “The thing that probably bothers me the most tonight is how they ran between the tackles so to speak and we're able to have that running game up in there, where we have a lot of strength. That's something that we've got to really look at and will,” he said.

Christian Parker has faced a steep challenge trying to fix a defense that has struggled for two seasons. The Cowboys’ defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Derrick Ansley is currently the only assistant on staff with prior experience as a defensive coordinator, having led the Los Angeles Chargers’ defense in 2023.

Given the lack of alternatives with proven coordinator experience on the staff, the Cowboys appear likely to keep Parker in place at least through the rest of the season. Jones’s remarks suggest the owner is prepared to give the new defensive coordinator time to address the issues, despite the mounting pressure from poor defensive performances and recent losses.
