South Carolina football wide receivers Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson will miss the 2026 season with injuries, the program announced Aug. 16.
The loss of two promising young receivers is a significant blow to the Gamecocks' offense. Both players had shown potential in their previous seasons, with Jayden Sellers playing in seven games as a freshman last season and recording 22 catches for 337 yards and one touchdown.
Jayden Gibson, a 6-foot-5 transfer from Oklahoma, had a strong 2023 season with 14 catches for 375 yards and five touchdowns. However, injuries have plagued him throughout his career, including a patellar tendon injury that kept him out of the 2024 season and a setback in his recovery that kept him off the field for the start of the 2025 season.
In a statement, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer expressed his disappointment for both players. "I am extremely disappointed for both of these young men," he said. "I know how hard each of them has worked over the spring and summer in getting ready for 2026 to help our team. I have full confidence they will both overcome the adversity they're facing, and we will help them in whatever way we can throughout the rehab process moving forward."
The depth at wide receiver for South Carolina is not a concern at the moment. The team has several other options, including Nyck Harbor, who is returning after leading the team in receiving yards (618) and touchdowns (six) last year. Mazeo Bennett is also expected to have a strong junior year, building on his 2024 season when he recorded 337 receiving yards.
The Gamecocks also brought in transfer wide receivers Nitro Tuggle from Purdue and DJ Black from UCF, who logged 500 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2025 and had 273 with two scores, respectively. South Carolina's first scrimmage on Aug. 15 was closed to media, but the team is expected to have a strong receiving corps despite the loss of Sellers and Gibson.
The injury setbacks for Sellers and Gibson are a significant blow to the Gamecocks' offense, but the team is expected to bounce back. The rehab process will be a crucial part of their recovery, and the team will provide support to both players throughout their journey. The next step for the Gamecocks will be to prepare for their upcoming season without Sellers and Gibson.
