Islam Makhachev's Team Preparing Him for Ian Machado Garry
Islam Makhachev's team is putting the finishing touches on his preparation for his upcoming welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330.
Makhachev's coach, Javier Mendez, believes his pupil has the correct strategy to defeat Machado Garry. Mendez, who has been working with Makhachev at AKA, highlighted the Dagestani's well-rounded skillset, which includes both grappling and striking ability. Despite not having a training partner that can replicate Machado Garry's fighting style, Mendez is confident in Makhachev's preparation.
Mendez revealed that Makhachev is benefiting from training with Usman Nurmagomedov, the current PFL lightweight champion. Nurmagomedov is also preparing for his own fight at PFL New York, but is available to train with Makhachev, allowing them to maximize their training sessions.
"We don't have somebody [like Machado Garry] at our disposal that is that good. But, we do have who I happen to believe is the No.1 lightweight in the world, Usman, as a main sparring partner," Mendez said.
Mendez emphasized the importance of Makhachev's timing, particularly when throwing strikes. Nurmagomedov's elite timing has been a valuable asset to Makhachev's training camp, allowing him to sharpen his striking ahead of the fight against Machado Garry.
Nurmagomedov's experience and timing are crucial for Makhachev's success, according to Mendez. "That's what we had as our main sparring partner for this [title fight against Machado Garry]. And now, you know, we'll have more people that could train with Islam, but Usman was one of the main ones," Mendez said.
A successful welterweight title defense would elevate Makhachev's legacy, making him a strong contender for the greatest of all time, according to Mendez. If Makhachev can defeat Machado Garry in spectacular fashion, Mendez believes the public will start considering him as one of the greatest fighters in the sport.
Mendez's comments suggest that his team is confident in Makhachev's preparation and believes he has the skills and strategy to defeat Machado Garry. The outcome of the fight will have significant implications for Makhachev's legacy and will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
Makhachev's team will continue to fine-tune his preparation ahead of the fight, with Mendez and Nurmagomedov playing key roles in his training camp. The stage is set for a highly anticipated showdown between Makhachev and Machado Garry at UFC 330.
